My birthday turned out to be very special indeed. So what did I do to celebrate? Well, my best laid plans were these: since I was to work at 5 pm, I was going to mail winter clothes home, pay a bill or three, eat at my favorite Mexican restaurant, and maybe take in “The Great Gatsby”.
Hmm, Gatsby in 3D or regular 2D? I was mulling this decision when I got a call … not so fast on my plans. A last minute request to guide 19 folks on a private tour of DC. They have a family reunion every three years, and three years ago they chose DC as their 2013 reunion site. Their matriarch and ringleader? 92 year old Carol Howard … mother, aunt, and grandmother to several in the group.
I wish I could adequately describe Carol’s joy at finding her husband’s name in the registry at the WWII Memorial. Seeing Carol’s face light up and her family of 18 taking pictures as she beamed was infinitely more special than watching DiCaprio schlep around as Gatsby. She was special … and so was my birthday.
